Jim Smith, the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) Preparatory (NPP) Project Financial Manager, has worked at Goddard Space Flight Center for 24 years in a wide variety of administrative support positions.
Smith transferred to the Flight Projects Directorate as a Project Support Manager of the International Solar Terrestrial Physics (ISTP) Program. In April of 1996, he moved to the new Earth System Science Pathfinder (ESSP) Program, an opportunity that allowed him to participate in all aspects of the mission project life cycle. New challenges were to be had when he transferred to the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Development Project as a Resource Analyst in August of 1999. Later, he handled several missions while he was the Business Manager for the Explorers Program Office.
Smith later supported the GSFC Deputy Center Director, tracking GSFC Overall Program Performance metrics on GSFC Mission success and failures.
In January 2005, he became the Business Manager for the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) Project. This new GSFC in-house mission provided valuable experience in managing the technical aspects of project, creating tools for tracking cost and in collecting and analyzing Earned Value Management data to track the technical and financial status of the project.
In his free time, Smith enjoys spending time with family and friends, bicycling, motorcycle riding, playing guitar, shooting pool, spending time at the beach and working on cars in his garage.
